Juvenile Eel Monitoring Project

DEC New York  This is a very valuable opportunity to get close to nature and science alike. I would say it is especially for children, but about a decade ago, I did stream cleanup with Raritan Headwaters Association. (I also did a similar cleanup with New Jersey Stream Team in 2016.) I felt fairly convinced I would sign on as a citizen scientist doing stream monitoring with RHA, once I were to retire. I still might. I got very close to the river, back when I had time to fish it on my lunch breaks.

First Lake Hopatcong Report

Laurie Murphy:

The lake levels have come up some, but you still need to use caution while navigating around any shallow areas. Main Lake temps are sitting around 39 degrees while the shallower areas have crept into the mid 40’s. The crappie & yellow perch bite is in full swing. Search out the warmest water to find these fish,in the  backs of coves, sandy flats or hard bottom areas.  Target the fish with ultralight setups, along with artificial jigs and bobbers, or small suspending jerkbaits or tiny swimbaits.  For live bait, try fathead minnows , small garden worms or mealworms. These same baits may also produce some bass & pickerel.  We will start to rent boats sometime early April, but are open now with bait and tackle. Please call ahead for our hours during the month of March. In the meantime, you can check out The Lake Hopatcong Guide Service as they are up and operating at this time. Check out their website or call  (856) 556-5447 to book your trip now. They have five different trip options to pick from. Have a great week !
